GPS to save baby Jesus statue →
A statue of baby Jesus in Bal Harbour, Fla., will be outfitted with a GPS tracking device after the Nativity scene’s previous statue was stolen. “I don’t anticipate this will ever happen again,” the woman in charge of the display told the AP, “but we may need to rely on technology to save our savior.”

Reading List
I plan on using this blog to note my reading choices. In the past couple weeks, I’ve been digging deep into style and rhetoric books, anything about writing. I’ve finished Richard Lanham’s Style: An Anti-Textbook and Lynn Truss’s Eats, Shoots and Leaves. Now, as you can see by the link posted below this, I’m into Jacques Barzun. Any recommendations out there?

I have readers, apparently
I got a jolt today in the form of a comment on my “baby blog,” the blog I share with my girlfriend Susan about our upcoming (outcoming?) baby. An old college friend wrote that he had stumbled upon the baby blog quite by accident after flipping through a few links from my real blog (not this Tumblr abberation). But then he wrote that he was unhappy that I was going on...

Lessing
From my selection of quotations and posts about Doris Lessing’s Nobel Prize acceptance speech, it may seem that I am criticizing her. Indeed I am, because I think she takes a rather narrow view of the value of modern media to the literary-literate life. While I admire her past and her stories about the value of books and the strong desire that some people have just to read, I must point out...

Tumblr-ing into the Abyss
I’m experimenting with new forms of blogging, alternatives to my traditional site Hypercrit and my Facebook and Del.icio.us pages, which have become my main streams of personal expression lately. As I go, I find that I want to emulate the traditional notion of the Web log more and more, chronicling where I have been on the Web and sharing that experience with others — not so much of my...
